Mid-pen highway dropped! (Niagara to Toronto Corridor) - so what is up instead?
The Mid-Peninsula highway from Niagara to Hamilton is no longer being considered, although a new expressway looping through Ancaster, Flamborough and Halton from the 403 to the 407 is still on the table. The dramatic shift in provincial government plans was unveiled this week at public information centres on the Niagara to GTA Corridor (NGTA) study, and appears to weaken arguments for the city-planned aerotropolis
The preferred options for provincial transportation changes in Hamilton, Halton and Niagara are now being broken into three segments that only firmly endorse a new highway between Fort Erie and the 406 near Welland. In the central area of the study between St Catharines and Burlington, the plans only support adding two HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes to the QEW.
